This mokuhanga woodblock print is inspired from our time in the Blue Mountains, Australia š¦šŗ earlier this year. The Blue Mountains got its name from the eucalyptus trees releasing a blue-ish haze, giving the landscape a blue tinge.
When I took the photo, I planned to get there early for the sunrise, but was disappointed because it was an overcast morning and couldnāt see the sun or a sunrise. I didnāt realize at the time, but my camera captured the blue-ness from the eucalyptus trees quite well!
The wood grain in the sky was very physically demanding and quite difficult to get right, so I made two versions - 1, with a more obvious wood grain but lighter tone of blue and 2, darker blue but less obvious wood grain.
Another inspiration is the Japanese Aizuri-e, a form of Ukioyo-e print only using shades of blue.
I combined all of these different āblueā elements to make āThe Blue, Blue Mountainsā printed on Hankusa Japanese washi paper,
